Strange Doctrines

Final Quest In my last post, I began a critique of Rick Joyner’s book, The Final Quest. Although this book has been out for over a decade, it’s still very popular and is continuing to bring people into the apostolic-prophetic movement. Also, many of the book’s erroneous teachings are taught in apostolic-prophetic churches.

Rick Joyner headshot In the introduction to The Final Quest, Joyner (pictured here) claims that modern prophetic revelations — like the vision contained in his book — can’t be used to establish doctrine (teaching). He says, “We have the Scriptures for that.” The two purposes of modern revelation, according to Joyner, are to reveal God’s will about certain matters and to illuminate doctrine that is taught in the Bible.

Yet — despite what Joyner says — his book contains many doctrines not found in Scripture or that contradict Scripture. In this post, I will look at a few examples of each.

Doctrines Not Found in Scripture
• Christians will be assigned to various levels of heaven. The Christians who served the Lord wholeheartedly, and with the right motives, will dwell in a level closer to Christ’s throne and will enjoy more of His presence, according to Joyner. They also will have more glorious bodies than the less devoted Christians. Those who didn’t serve Christ wholeheartedly will be assigned to the “outer fringes” of heaven for all eternity — far from Christ’s throne and presence. But, first, they will endure a hell-like experience — which lasts for what seems like a lifetime — until they repent of their lack of devotion to Christ. Only then will they be allowed to enjoy the lowest level of heaven. (See chapter 4 of The Final Quest for this teaching.)

Although the Bible does teach that there will be rewards given out in heaven, it doesn’t teach that there are different levels or that some Christians will have more glorious spiritual bodies than others. It also doesn’t teach that some Christians will have to go through a hell-like experience. Instead, the Bible teaches that heaven will be a place of eternal joy and intimacy with Christ for all God’s people. And it teaches that there will be no mourning in heaven because Jesus will wipe every tear from our eyes (Revelation 21:4).

• Last-days Christians must submit to modern-day prophets to have victory in the final battle (pages 58-59). They should be dependent on the prophets like children are dependent on their parents, according to Joyner (page 60).

Yet, the Bible doesn’t teach that Christians must submit to modern-day apostles and prophets. In fact, the apostle Paul warns the Galatian Christians about false teachers who want other Christians to seek after them (Galatians 4:17).

• Christians should frequently interact with angels (page 71).

But nowhere does the Bible teach that angelic encounters are to become common or sought after.

Doctrines That Contradict Scripture
• Joyner teaches that marriages will continue in heaven (page 103), though Jesus taught that there will be no marriage in heaven (Matthew 22:29-30).

• Joyner teaches that Christians — during their earthly lives — can eat the fruit of the Tree of Life that was in the Garden of Eden (pages 35, 41-43), though the Bible teaches that we can’t eat of the Tree of Life until we go to heaven (Revelation 2:7; 22:2, 14, 19). In fact, after Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden, God put angelic guards around it to block access to the Tree of Life (Genesis 3:24). Yet, in Joyner’s vision, these angels allow Joyner to eat the tree’s fruit, which, according to Joyner, represents God’s love. Joyner said God told him:

This [fruit] is now your daily bread. It shall never be withheld from you. You may eat as much and as often as you like (page 35).

Seeking access to the Tree of Life — though forbidden by God until heaven — is a recurring doctrine in the apostolic-prophetic movement. I hope to address this teaching more in a future post.

• Joyner’s misinterprets the “parable of 10 virgins” in Matthew 25:1-13 (page 89-91). He says the five foolish virgins are Christians who wasted their lives by living for themselves rather than serving God. So, they are assigned to the lowest level of heaven. But, first, these foolish virgins must go to a place of outer darkness where they gnash their teeth, according to Joyner. (By implication, Joyner also teaches that the foolish virgins won’t be able to take part in the great wedding feast, since, in Matthew 25, the foolish virgins are barred from entering it.)

Yet — despite Joyner’s teaching — Matthew 25 makes it clear that the foolish virgins won’t make it to heaven at all. According to the passage, the five wise virgins are allowed into the wedding feast, and then the door is shut behind them (Matthew 25:10). The five foolish virgins will try to get in, but Jesus tells them, “I do not know you” (Matthew 25:12). So, these foolish virgins are people who don’t belong to Christ because they didn’t trust Him for their salvation.

All God’s people — since they’re all part of the bride of Christ — will take part in the wedding feast. No people in heaven will be left out of this festivity. Nor will any of God’s people “gnash their teeth in outer darkness” — as Joyner teaches — because this is a biblical description for hell. For more on this, see Hampton Keathley’s article, “The Outer Darkness: Heaven’s Suburb or Hell?”

I’m troubled that Joyner — someone who is considered an “apostle” and “prophet” — would be so careless with his handling of Scripture. The Bible warns that church teachers should be able to accurately handle the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

Strange Doctrines
The apostle Paul told Timothy — the leader of the church of Ephesus — to “instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines” (1 Timothy 1:3). Paul said these doctrines are based on “myths” and “mere speculation.” I think Paul’s command should be applied to many of Joyner’s doctrines.

There are other strange doctrines in Joyner’s Final Quest, which I plan to look at in future posts.

Thanks for continuing to bring these errors to light Holly.

BTW, I think you have some spam floating around. The same post (posted as Daivd, although is probably a spambot) was posted several times in many old articles.

I copied this from Holly’s latest writings titled “Strange Doctrines” above although I do not agree with what the author has written in his book as seen in this blog see above 4th paragraph and below as well:

I still hold to what I wrote last night please see below, before reading the latest part in Holly’s blog, I would say pray and ask for The Holy Spirit’s guidance:

Hello Everyone especially all my Brothers and Sisters in The Lord Jesus Christ: I will be brief. I have given allot of thought and prayer to what we all comment on good, bad or in between. I have decided that after prayer I am and so are most of us reacting to so many things on this blog. We are all in our minds and hearts to one degree or another right.

The point I am trying to make, would it not be wiser for all of us to stop trying to get points across about people and instead concentrate how we could encourage one another in The Word. I know that there are many false teachers and false works, yet do you not think it would be wiser to follow Jesus example and pray for people who we feel are in error of scripture Matthew 5:43-48. If they are wrong, The Lord will, as always, deal with them and thier works, He will deny them Matthew 7:21-23 and Romans 12:19-20. If we go even further we see His example on the Cross
    Luke 23:34.

I can speak from personal experience here as I am as wrong as anyone else, and as Jesus also reminds us in Matthew 5:14-16 we are His light, the light of the world, and we are to shine for Him so as to glorify The Father in heaven.

I pray that we can turn Holly’s wonderful blog into an encouraging spirit filled site for one another. It would be so wonderful if others would read this blog and write comments like Trust in the Lord, I recieved Christ today, I was water baptised today, etc.

Thank you all and God Bless

    Your Brother in The Lord

    David/Dave,

Why would you want to re-post something that is in the main article about a false teaching, and then revert to your post about keeping this blog “happy and nice”.

I do praise God today for all He is doing, has done, and will continue to do.

But please refrain from clogging up the blog with your copy/paste finger.

    Stick to the topic

    Dave,

Why are you continually posting that same comment over and over in different articles?

My feed reader counted it 5 or 6 times since yesterday.

I completely agree with you that the tone of this blog has been a bit intense toward anyone who hints at questioning anything said here (you and myself included) it doesn’t have to be that way.

Reactions like that will only push people from Christ not draw them toward him.

  6. Charles says:

How would Mr. Joyner respond if asked if he agreed with the “statement of faith” on this website?

  7. David says:

Dear Kim: What seems to be the problem here, I was only trying to have others see things from The Lord’s point of view. and to see how we can encourage each other and other non believers so as to encourage them to know Christ better.

hollys blog, is about warning belivers of false teachings, and false leaders in these last days. if your not interested in that, there is a lot of feel good ministry available. we should not contend with one another, but contend for the faith, and truth. we have our Lords warning that in the end, there would be much false teaching. these are the last days. holly is warning belivers! id like to say that i feel the parable of the ten virgins is largely misinterpreted. i belive that because of the fact that it follows our Lords answers to the apostles questions on the end times, that its a warning to belivers to not take the mark of the beast, or to worship the beast. Christ does not tell the foolish virgins i never knew you. the wise virgins instruct the foolish to go to them that sell, and buy for yourselfs. if they did not have the mark, they could not buy, or sell. we know from the parable that they did go to buy. in Yashua mark

  9. laodiceanwarning says:

    Mark…you said:
is that a typo or did you mean that?
Jesus tells in that parable that in fact the five foolish were NOT known.
Jesus is saying here that there will be those who have a form of readiness but they are in fact NOT ready and therefore unknown to the Lord.
If you meant that..time to return to your bible and read it.
The popular teachers Holly is talking about uses that passage that way also.
I hope your not getting it from them.

  10. Justin says:

    Mat 25

1Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Mark, yes the wise virgins tell the foolish to go to those that buy and sell and get some oil but this is before the coming of the Bridegroom. While they are out getting oil He comes. When they knock and ask to be let in He clearly says “Verily I say unto you, I know you not”.

  11. mark nowak says:

im not sure what your point is justin? this is clearly the rapture when the bride groom comes. the cry alerting them to His return was made because of the sign of the coming of the Son of man. not to mention, the sign in the sun, moon, and stars. this takes place with the opening of the sixth seal. at the end of the tribulation. i stand by what iv said. unless you, or laodiceanwarning, can offer something better, then im standing on my statements. im open. i want the truth of Yashuas word. but you will have to do better than this! the standard lame sermon on the ten virgins, or herbs ”SPIRITUAL SHALLOWS” bunk (which he did remove), at least going back i didnt find it, is not the correct interpretation of that parable.

  12. laodiceanwarning says:

Ok..mark..are you saying that the five foolish go buy and sell and are able to enter in the kingdom at a later date?
If that is true then you are speaking from a pretrib stance which divides the coming of the Lord in two.
The scriptures from old to new are consistent. There is only one day of the Lord and ONE rapture/resurrection.
For example..there are only seven trumpets. Paul said the last trump would sound and we would be changed/resurrected depending on whether you were physically dead or not.
Revelation reveals 7 trumpets and the only mystery or secret in that book we are not privy to is the thunders. That’s it.
To infer that God was not able to make it that plain is to say the Word is not reliable. And keeps us in the dark when scriptures are clear that we are to know and understand the times. And by understanding we will not be deceived should someone tell us Jesus is returning a different way.
    (Mt 24 2 Thess 2)
There is only one return of the Bridegroom not two. Not a second wedding party celebration. To say there is more is to be willfully ignorant of the Word when the Word is really plain about this.
So you have to decide who you are listening to. Teachers who interpret according to their understanding or the Word that will teach us if we are willing to learn.

  13. Justin says:

    Mark,

I am not going to try and convince you of anything. You said
Christ does not tell the foolish virgins i never knew you
yet Mat 25:12 clearly says: But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

I am not going to debate anyone about the rapture or post vs pre trib. My point was you made a false statement and I was just pointing that out.

  14. mark nowak says:

justin, laodiceanwarning, i should have been more clear in my first post. Yashua of course tells the five foolish virgins “i know you not”. He doesnt tell them “i never knew you”. i think that His answer to them could be like they were disowned, because they took the mark. had their name blotted out of the book of life. i understand what laodiceanwarning is saying about the “last trump”. perhaps it doesnt have anything to do with the trumpets concerning Gods wrath? we are not appointed to wrath. there are people interpreting the prophetic end time events a zillion different ways. i belive there are slightly different perspectives, because we are all uniqe, as the gospel accounts reflect. however there are no private interpretations. there is only the meaning to scripture God intended to convey, when it was given. if these trumpets announcing the judgments are key to the timing of the rapture, then what about the sign of the sun, moon, and stars? clearly matthew 24 equates those signs with the rapture. they correspond with the opening of the sixth seal. i only belive in one rapture, so relax concerning that. i made no false statements. i just wasnt explicit enough in my first post, of the point i was trying to make. sorry. love mark

  15. jody says:

(there is only the meaning to scripture God intended to convey, when it was given.)

Amen Mark…I was hoping it was just a typo misunderstanding 🙂

  16. kimberly says:

    yet another day

two people slip into eternity every second.

most going to hell because they do not know Christ.

but alas… more Christians get up in arms about the timing of the rapture.

i went on the street yesterday asking people about their spiritual lives. none cared of pre-mid-most-pre wrath, not cared or knew of rick joyner. but the majority wanted to hear of Jesus. all had been lied to about Him. most had lived around people that argued their faith, but never lived it. sad to know that we strongly hold to when He is coming again, but are missing out on the reason He came to begin with.

  17. I had most of Rick Joyners books for years & during that time I was battling suiside. When I was finally set free & tried to read his books they no longer made sense. A friend of mine said she never could understand what I got from them & now neither can I. Liz

  18. Dawn says:

Excellent article. I never realized the depths of Rick’s apostasy before. This teaching is great and I will save this for future reference.

  19. Wickus says:

“Christians will be assigned to various levels of heaven. The Christians who served the Lord wholeheartedly, and with the right motives, will dwell in a level closer to Christ’s throne and will enjoy more of His presence, according to Joyner.”

Jesus said: Mat 19:30 But many shall be last that are first; and first that are last.

If the last is first and the first is last, there is no first and last.

I like the commentary of the end times by Ken Powers on http://www.futuretruth.com. He does not teach apart from the Old Covenant. That whole site is well worth reading and studing.

    I’m sorry that is http://www.futuretruth.net.

  22. Lafe says:

I do not care how high and lifted up Charisma Magazine places Rick Joyner
nor do I care that either Strange or L. Grady consider him a powerful
man of God or that in their opinion God has used him.
Rick Joyner, if you read his nonsense and mess is a false prophet. If you
read the standards by which to judge a prophet and his word coming to
    pass….Rick fails….If he fails once…he is a false prophet.
Let’s quit giving these “prophet pimps” so much leeway in their continual
error. The Spirit of God does not miss in prophecy and no where do you
find in the N.T. the prophets missing it and sayings….”Ooophs…sorry!”
The Body of Christ has got to wise up and mature and hold these prophetic
rascals accountable for their glib statements….including Rick Joyner,
Kim Clement, C. Peter Wagner and a host of others.
They may profess salvation but as for their prophecy they should be
publicly sanctioned and told to repent of their fleshy ways.

  23. shelby says:

I don’t know Rick Joiner, never heard him speak or read anything he has written except what is written above.

Regarding different levels of glorified bodies…

1 Corinthians 15:41,42 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. So will it be in the resurrection of the dead.

Regarding some being closer to God’s throne…

Matthew 20:23 Jesus answering the mother who asked for her sons to be at Jesus’ right and left hand in His kingdom. He told her it was not His to give but these places belong to those for whom they have been prepared for by my Father.
